PlainOldFavorites and FirefoxView for Firefox 3
As you might know, Firefox 3 will be released very soon, so I needed to go over my extensions, make sure they are compatible and make the necessary adjustments here and there.
I started with PlainOldFavorites and FirefoxView, here are the new versions:
- Compatible with Firefox 3
- Catalan, Czech, Danish, Greek, Portuguese translations – thanks to the BabelZilla team!
- Firefox 3 compatibility
- 24 new translations: Catalan, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, Persian, Finnish, Galician, Gujarati, Hebrew, Croatian, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Slovak, Turkish, Ukrainian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional) – thanks to the BabelZilla team!
- Graduates to version 1.0!
So, check the new versions out and let me know if you see any issues.
Also, stay tuned for the new version of ColorZilla coming soon – unlike its two siblings above, ColorZilla’s new version will be a bit more major 😉

Hi Alex. I hope this gets to you since I can’t find your email address. Mine is muchmore@comcast.net. I have been using Plainold favorites for as long as I can remember. Currently I’m using Fx version 2.0.0.12 and your extension version is 1.0. Everything was fine with it until I just bought a new Vista HP computer. Previously I was running Windows 98SE. The extension does not seem to be working properly any longer. Please contact me using ‘plainoldfavorites’ in the subject line and I’ll shoot you a print screen of what I’m seeing.
Thanks in advance,
Bruce

Hi, Alex.
Is it just me, or “Open in tabs” does not work in FF3*?
* (..and maybe FF2, I stayed with 1.5)

Hi, Plain Old Favorites is great as we use several computers and a combination of IE and Firefox in our house, Plain Old Favorites allows us to share one Favorites folder on our file server. Thanks
I am having trouble hiding the Bookmarks Drop down menu though! The method you suggested works fine in my Firefox2 but not in 3, any ideas or suggestions would be great.

Hi Alex,
Glad to see PlainOldFavorites updated for FF3, it’s an essential for my workplace. Just to say the ID of the Bookmarks menu has changed, so the userChrome.css rule should now be:
#bookmarksMenu {
display:none !important;
}
Found that tidbit on the Mozillazine forums, which is where the !important addition comes from. I don’t know if it’s essential, probably not.
A couple of other items that users might want to add to the rules are the context-menu entries for bookmarking a page or a link, like so:
#context-bookmarklink,
#context-bookmarkpage {
display: none !important;
}
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Robin

Hello Alex
I have the same problem as RBLSantos: “Open in Tabs” does not work for me in FF3 with PlainOldFavorites 1.0.1.
In FF2 and version 1.0 everything was perfect.
Observation: looking at add-on in FF3, the bar for “settings” is grayed out.
Tried to deinstall FF3 and all other add-ons (actually only five are used), then reinstalled FF3 and PlainOldFavorites 1.0.1 only, but same result.
What could be wrong? (XP SP3, fully updated).
Thanks for a comment and: your add-on is main reason I use FF3.

Hi, Alex
Thanks for PlainOldFavorites such a good extension.
I’m using Firefox 3.0.1 on Windows XP SP3, both English edition. The “Open in Tabs” option cannot work for me.
Another problem is about “Sort by Name” option. It works fine on English bookmarks. However, the sorting for Chinese is not according to Chinese Pinyin, which make the order like in random. Could you please solve this problem? Thanks so much

By the way, I hope the favorite can be opened in new tabs. Thanks a lot.

Hi! i read once a very good tutorial on compiling a C++ XPCOM component.
With the release of firefox 3, my component doesn’t work anymore, and I’ve tracked down the problem to compilation and linking with the XPCOM. ¿Can you help me?

Apparently, the FireFox 3.0.1 update/patch broke something. As BlueHawk states, the “Open in Tabs” option no longer works. Here’s to hoping that a fix will be forthcoming soon!
And Alex: thank you for the one extension that I will never use FireFox without.
